Quality Care for Your Aging Parents
In celebration of Older Americans Month, I wanted to share a loving story with you of HOW Task Complete has helped our friends Harry and Katherine!!
Harry and Katherine are a sweet, funny, devoted-to-each-other senior couple. Like many aging adults, they were managing well on their own, enjoying retirement. They LOVE living independently in their home of many years. They have lots of friends and activities they enjoy doing with one another when Katherine feeling is up to it, and they have children who love them dearly and want the best for them! But their children do not live nearby, which is a very common scenario for seniors.
But it’s not always easy for Harry. There have been many doctors, nursing and therapy appointments and all of the paperwork and managing that goes with that. There are meals to be cooked, a house to be maintained, laundry to be done, bills to be paid, etc.
Those things began to pile up and started to overwhelm our valiant caretaker Harry. His children saw the need for help, but living so far away they could not feasibly be here to help.
Within 15 minutes, I knew immediately they were a GREAT fit for the senior services we provide!!
Like many of our stories, we started out slowly, visiting twice a week to clean out the fridge, pick up a few groceries, make a few meals and do the laundry.
As H+K became more accustomed to having help, (many aging adults resist help in the beginning because they do not want to be a “burden” to others), they allowed us to do more things for them.
We made an appointment for a car inspection and Harry trusted us to sit with Katherine while he took care of that task. We organized their personal papers by creating a medical binder for them both where all their doctors’ information and medications could be kept for quick reference.
We help them maintain the overwhelming paperwork and correspondences that come to their mailbox daily. We have since then started putting a new filing system in place, going gently as not to disrupt Harry’s “system”. Our organizing specialist helped H+K to purge through closets of old clothes, creating a more inviting a clutter-free space.
Over the past few months we have been able to watch Katherine’s health improve and they need us a little less, but each week is a fun, unique visit where they get to work with our loving, caring team doing the things that were once so easy for them, but now require more attention to detail.
The Power of Support
Harry appreciates the support we give him as he cares for Katherine. Their children feel less overwhelmed and guilty about their distance away from H&K. A rough time is a bit smoother for this family now.
Whether we’re cooking a meal, doing the laundry, providing companionship or helping with complex medical papers, Harry loves to tell me “Kelly Schaefer, you have yet to send me a dud.”
Gotta love a guy who tells it like it is!! This is the power of support. This is what it’s like when we provide help and care for aging adults in Bucks County.
